Chapter 16

Jacob

Fred’s was a dive bar in town that served multiple purposes: having a guys’ night and trying to pick up girls. Kyle was intent on doing both. He—rightly—thought that I wasn’t spending much time with him this summer, and he also wanted to see if there was a girl who could help him get over Melanie.

Jay, Kyle, and I walked in, and it looked like we were only going to accomplish one of his goals. The place was practically empty except for the old-timers sitting at the bar. The pool table in the back corner called our name. After few rounds of pool, and a few rounds of beer, we did what every group of guys does. We talked about girls.

“So there I was, in the restaurant parking lot, fucking the waitress who served our table that night, seconds away from finishing, when some guy came up to the car and smashed my window in,” Jay said. He liked to talk with his hands, waving them about in order to keep our attention.

“Holy shit,” Kyle said.

“Yeah, you’re telling me. So he starts screaming at us through the broken window. Apparently he's the manager of the place, and her ex-boyfriend.”

“Oh fuck,” I said.

Jay nodded. “Oh fuck, indeed. So here he is, yelling at her that she's a whore and whatnot. And here I was, pissed that he broke my window. So I just kept fucking her while he screamed and finished what I started. She didn't seem to mind.”

“Jesus, dude. You are fucking nuts,” Kyle said.

Jay shrugged. “Yeah, but that's nothing new. I tell you what, though, I think I've gone through most of the chicks in this town.”

“Maybe you should move on to the next town, partner,” I joked.

“I don't know. There's still some hotties left. Like your sister’s friend Jessica.”

“Hey, back off. If any of us is going to get with Jessica, it’s going to be me,” Kyle said, taking a big swig of beer. “But I know that would make things weird with Abby if it ever happened, so I’ve refrained from ever trying. I’ve definitely thought about it, though.” Kyle squatted down at the pool table to see if there was a good shot he could make.

“Speaking of Abby, I don't mean to be weird, but I was at the pool club the other day and got to see her,” Jay said. He wiggled his eyebrows up and down. “Your little sister’s all grown up, Kyle.” My body tensed. I wanted to give him a hard push in his chest. She was mine. I was becoming territorial.

“Yes, that is weird as fuck, Jay. Fuck off,” Kyle said.

Jay put his hands in the air. “Hey, man, no disrespect intended. I was just stating the obvious. I think she is stunning, don't you think, Jacob?”

Of course I agreed. I thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world. I gritted my teeth, ready to tell him I didn’t want to hear him say another word about her. Luckily, Kyle cut me off.
